OTC — Technicians Corner . . . When to Reset a Charging System?

Reset a Vehicle’s Charging System Anytime a Battery is Disconnected or Replaced.

Think how complicated and sophisticated a vehicle’s charging system is, and what it needs to accommodate versus just ten years ago. We weren’t charging two or more cell phones while driving down the road, nor was a GPS or laptop computer plugged in, and we certainly weren’t using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi in our vehicles. Now we are, and the charging system has to account for that.

Any variances or current spikes can shorten battery life and damage sensitive electronic equipment, and our vehicles today are filled with just that – electronic equipment. It’s why more OEMs are recommending or even requiring a reprogramming after a battery replacement, to ensure everything is functioning to factory spec.

As a battery ages, it’s charged differently. The vehicle and charging system knows that, and without being reset, it will charge a new battery as it charged the old one, which could shorten overall battery life on your customer’s new investment.

You can actually fry a new battery within a year or less by charging it improperly. Think of the return repairs and unhappy customers waiting in line, being told they need another new battery because the system wasn’t reset during the last installation.

It seems the old R&R – remove & replace - will soon be a new R&R – replace and reflash – as the adage of getting a customer’s vehicle back on the road.

Daylight Saving Time Ends … Turn Your Clocks Back!

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 4th at 2:00 A.M.  “Fall Back” by setting your clocks back one hour.

Did You Know?

The earliest known reference to the idea of daylight saving time comes from a purely whimsical 1784 essay by Benjamin Franklin, called “Turkey versus Eagle, McCauley is my Beagle.” It was first seriously advocated by William Willet, a British Builder, in his pamphlet “Waste of Daylight” in 1907.

Daylight saving time did indeed begin in the United States during World War I, primarily to save fuel by reducing the need to use artificial lighting. Although some states and communities observed daylight saving time between the wars, it was not observed nationally again until World War II.

World Pasta Day!

World Pasta Day is celebrated annually on October 25th.

This is a day for carb lovers to rejoice and celebrate their love for pasta. A versatile food as it comes in many shapes and sizes and can be served hot or cold, as a main dish, side dish or salad. References to pasta can be found as far back as 1154 in Sicily. Pasta is a universal food that is served nearly worldwide.

Did You Know?

  • Thomas Jefferson is credited with introducing macaroni to the United States. It seems that he fell in love with a certain dish he sampled in Naples, while serving as the U.S. Ambassador to France. In fact, he promptly ordered crates of “macaroni,” along with a pasta-making machine, sent back to the States.
  • The Spanish explorer Cortez brought tomatoes back to Europe from Mexico in 1519. Even then, almost 200 years passed before spaghetti with tomato sauce made its way into Italian kitchens.
  • The first American pasta factory was opened in Brooklyn, New York, in 1848, by a Frenchman named Antoine Zerega. Mr. Zerega managed the entire operation with just one horse in his basement to power the machinery. To dry his spaghetti, he placed strands of the pasta on the roof to dry in the sunshine.
  • The Italian word pasta means actually dough in English. In Italy all kinds and shapes of pasta are staples, no matter if it’s tortellini, lasagna, fusilli, macaroni or spaghetti. Usually pasta is made of potatoes, corn, rice or semolina and water.
